Comprehensive Hearing Assessment
A thorough look at your hearing health. Unhurried, clinical, and completely tailored to your life.
Hearing care is only as good as the diagnostic evaluation behind it. At Ross & Jamieson Hearing Care, we don’t believe in rushed five-minute screeners. We provide full clinical assessments using calibrated diagnostic equipment in an acoustic testing environment, giving you an accurate picture of your hearing and ear health.
Whether you have noticed speech becoming harder to catch in noisy rooms, or family members have gently hinted that the television is creeping up in volume, our role is simple: to find out exactly what is going on, explain it clearly, and guide you on the best path forward.
What to Expect During Your 90-Minute Consultation
We set aside an hour and a half for your initial appointment so we have plenty of time to listen, examine, test, and discuss your options without anyone looking at the clock.
1. Understanding You & Your Hearing Story
Every set of ears is connected to a person with a unique routine. Before touching any equipment, we sit down with you to explore:
- When you first noticed subtle changes in your hearing.
- The specific environments where conversations get lost (family dinners, meetings, restaurants, or busy public spaces).
- Any medical factors, tinnitus symptoms, or history of noise exposure.
2. Clinical Otoscopy & Ear Health Check
Using high-definition video otoscopy, we inspect your outer ear, ear canal, and tympanic membrane (eardrum).
- We check for excessive ear wax build-up, inflammation, or structural irregularities.
- You can view the live camera feed on screen alongside your clinician so you can see exactly what we see.
3. Diagnostic Audiometric & Middle Ear Testing
Carried out using calibrated equipment in a dedicated, sound-treated environment, we evaluate both your inner and middle ear function:
- Tympanometry (Tymps): A quick, gentle pressure test to check the health and movement of your middle ear and eardrum. This helps us accurately detect fluid behind the eardrum, glue ear, eustachian tube dysfunction, or middle ear congestion before testing hearing levels.
- Air Conduction (AC): Pinpoints the softest sounds you can hear as sound waves travel naturally through the outer, middle, and inner ear.
- Bone Conduction (BC): By gently bypassing the eardrum via a small bone conductor, we test your inner ear (cochlea) and auditory nerve directly to distinguish nerve-related hearing changes from mechanical middle ear blockages.
4. Clear, Plain-English Explanation
We review your audiogram together in straightforward, non-technical language. You will understand precisely which pitches are missing, why certain voices or environments feel exhausting, and what that means for your day-to-day life.
Hear Every Moment, Live Every Day
Where We Go From Here
Once your diagnostic tests are complete, we walk you through your findings. There are three typical outcomes:
- Medical Referral: If we identify any clinical signs that warrant specialist ENT or medical evaluation, we prepare a full diagnostic report and referral documentation for your GP.
- Healthy Hearing / Baseline Established: If your hearing sits within normal limits or shows only minor age-related changes that don't need correction, we archive your baseline results and set a reminder for a routine review in 12–24 months.
- Hearing Solutions & Tailored Demonstration: If you could benefit from hearing technology, we demonstrate what properly programmed prescriptive amplification actually sounds like in real time. We discuss style preferences (discreet in-the-canal vs. sleek receiver-in-canal), explore compatible models from leading independent manufacturers, and arrange a 30-day trial so you can test them in your own everyday environments.
